The departure is scheduled at 3.30 pm for the Ruins of Gede: an Arab-Swahili city mysteriously abandoned in 1400.
Popular tradition makes this place magical and at the same time feared, to the point that no one among the locals would go into the ruins after sunset...
Excavations have brought to light Ming porcelain, glassware, and Persian furnishings in glazed terracotta from the 13th century, the date of the city's foundation.
For completely unknown reasons this city was abandoned in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, because the sea retreated or because of the invasions of the Galla tribe from the north.
The ruins are surrounded by lush vegetation with numerous baobabs.
The palaces are built with lime based on coral and earth. [safari gede]
During the walk, which takes about 90 minutes, there are monkeys and baboons screaming from the treetops, lizards moving fast in the undergrowth, and large butterflies flitting among the ruins.
The return to Watamu is scheduled for 17.30 / 18.00.
